Colchicine is a medication used to treat and prevent gout attacks and familial Mediterranean fever (FMF). It works by reducing inflammation in the body.
Uses:
- Treatment and prevention of gout attacks
- Treatment of FMF
Dosage:
- For gout: Initially, 1.2 mg (two 0.6 mg tablets) followed by 0.6 mg one hour later. This is followed by 0.6 mg taken once or twice daily until the gout attack has resolved or for up to 14 days.
- For FMF: The usual dose is 1.2 mg (two 0.6 mg tablets) taken once or twice daily.
Side effects:
- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain
- Muscle pain or weakness
- Hair loss
- Skin rash or itching
- Reduced white blood cell count (which can increase the risk of infections)
- Serious side effects include low blood cell count, liver or kidney damage, and muscle damage. These require immediate medical attention.
Precautions:
- Colchicine should be used with caution in patients with liver or kidney problems, and in patients taking certain medications, as it can interact with other drugs.
- It is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women.
- It should not be used in patients with severe gastrointestinal, renal or cardiac disease.
- Alcohol consumption should be avoided during colchicine treatment.
