Uses:
- Schizophrenia: Risperdal is used to treat symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized thinking in people with schizophrenia.
- Bipolar disorder: Risperdal is used to treat manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder.
- Irritability associated with autism: Risperdal is used to treat symptoms such as aggression, self-injurious behavior, and temper tantrums in children and adolescents with autism.
Dosage:
- The dosage of Risperdal varies depending on the condition being treated, the age of the patient, and other factors. Your doctor will determine the appropriate dose for you.
- The medication is usually taken once or twice a day, with or without food.
- Do not stop taking Risperdal without talking to your doctor.
Side effects:
- Common side effects of Risperdal include drowsiness, dizziness, weight gain, constipation, and dry mouth.
- Less common but potentially serious side effects include tardive dyskinesia (a movement disorder), neuroleptic malignant syndrome (a potentially life-threatening condition), and an increased risk of stroke in elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis.
- Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any unusual or severe side effects.
Precautions:
- Tell your doctor if you have a history of diabetes, seizures, low blood pressure, or heart disease.
- Risperdal may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be alert.
- Do not drink alcohol while taking Risperdal.
- Risperdal may cause dizziness or fainting when you stand up, especially if you are older. Be careful when standing up from a sitting or lying position.
- Risperdal may cause an increase in blood sugar levels, which can lead to diabetes. Your doctor may monitor your blood sugar levels while you are taking the medication.
It is important to follow your doctor's instructions and to ask any questions you may have about Risperdal.
